Contrary to popular belief, divorce does not always mean that you will have a clean split from your ex-spouse. If you have children together, this also doesn’t mean that you will never have to see that person again. For some divorcees, the process of separation can be a difficult one. And if your situation is anything like that of “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd, then you might find yourself contending with much more than most people would.
If you’ve been following the news lately then you’ve likely heard about the issues being raised by both Shepherd’s current husband and ex-husband. In recent court documents, Shepherd’s ex-husband claims that the television star’s hectic schedule keeps her away from her son. The 9-year-old boy, who has special needs, is “suffering from neglect” claims her ex-husband, who is petitioning for full custody of the boy.
On top of this complex family law issue, Shepherd is also facing inflammatory remarks from her estranged husband. Her husband, from whom she is filing divorce, is accusing her of violating their prenuptial agreement, which he tried to have amended to include a “fat” clause as well as a stipulation that stated Shepherd must be submissive to him for religious purposes. Although Shepherd did agree to sign these amendments, it’s possible that her husband could use this as fodder for in his case for separation.
Shepherd must also contend with the issue of custody over the couple’s unborn child. Much like the custody battle with her ex-husband, the star’s current husband is also requesting full custody. It’s possible, as some legal experts have speculated, that a decision made in one custody hearing could affect the other. This could mean losing custody of both children, which could be heartbreaking for the hard-working celebrity.
Although not all of our California readers will have to contend with media attention regarding their own family law issues, it’s important to point out that your case may be just as complex as the one above. And just as Shepherd has likely realized with her own situation, help from an attorney may be the only way to come to a resolution in the end.
