Doctors in California may work long hours at their jobs, but a new study has found that they are less likely to divorce than people who work in other professions. The recent study, which was authored by a physician and Harvard Medical School professor, dispelled the popular belief that the stresses associated with a doctor’s life lead to a higher divorce rate.
Researchers were able to assess the divorce rates of health care professionals by surveying 200,000 health care executives, dentists, pharmacists and nurses as well as 40,000 doctors. In addition to finding notable differences in the divorce rates of doctors and various professionals, the researchers also determined that gender played a role in those divorce rates.
According to the study, 24 percent of the doctors who participated reported that they had been divorced while 35 percent of people who work in a profession other than health care said that they had ended a marriage. Pharmacists and dentists also had a relatively low divorce rate, at 23 percent and 25 percent, respectively. The study found that the health care professionals who are the most likely to get divorced are nurses and health care executives, with 31 percent of the executives and 33 percent of the nurses having been divorced.
While divorce rates for doctors are lower than average it was interesting to note that the divorce rate for female physicians was 1.5 times higher than their male counterparts according to the study. The respondent’s primary explanation reflected the reality of being forced to make more choices regarding work-life balance.
