Lessons that can be learned from celebrity divorces

When a California couple decides that they need to get a divorce, it can be very difficult to know who to turn to once the decision has been made. Advice can come from almost anywhere, whether a person wants it or not. However, there are certain things that celebrity divorces can teach divorcing couples.
For example, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced that they would be getting divorced one day after they reached their 10-year anniversary. To outsiders, the timing may seem strange; however, there may be some good reasons to wait. Depending on the situation, waiting until the 10-year mark may entitle a lower-earning party to receive Social Security benefits based upon the earnings record of the other spouse.
In other cases, protecting intellectual property may mean that a spouse would have to wait for a certain amount of time before filing for divorce. Generally, any value that is created while the couple is still married must be split once the divorce occurs; if a project is incomplete and there is no value yet, a spouse may not be entitled to any future value if they file at this point.
When it comes to getting a divorce, property division can be problematic if the couple cannot agree on this issue. However, this does not mean that the matter has to be decided by a judge One alternative would be to agree to go to mediation on this issue. Another would be that that the respective family law attorneys for each party attempt to negotiate a settlement agreement.
