Tips for Co-Parents During or After a San Diego Divorce

On Behalf of | Sep 24, 2021 | Child Custody and Visitation

We are often asked about tips for co-parents during or after a San Diego divorce.  The best strategy is to seek the experienced advice and counsel of the Certified Family Law Specialists at Burke & Domercq which is tailored for the unique circumstances of your case.  However, there are a few basics for anyone who intends to co-parent during or after a divorce.

The first of our tips for co-parents during or after a San Diego divorce is to always look at things and make decisions based upon what is in the best interest for the child.  This is the legal standard the Court will bring to your case and even if you make a few mistakes along the way the Court will recognize the efforts and actions of a parent who has the child’s best interests at heart.

Have a plan for communications between yourself and the other co-parent as well as between each child and each parent.  The children need to have open access to each parent and it is important not to come between one of your children and the other parent.  Never speak negatively about the other parent in front of your children.  Model the ability to calmly identify options and rationally discuss challenges and potential resolutions.

Another of the important tips for co-parents during or after a San Diego divorce is to keep every scheduled parenting time event possible.  Make sure to attend all of your child’s important activities including parent-teacher conferences, open houses, extra-curricular activities and religious practices.  It is best to have a policy to avoid social media altogether, especially during a divorce.  Any photo can be taken out of context.  For example, photos showing the presence of alcohol (or worse) in the presence of children or a night out at the bar when you have parenting responsibilities can have dire consequences on your parenting goals.

If you wish to protect your rights as a co-parent during and after a divorce you need to understand every aspect of communications, the best interests of the child and fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to you by the Court.  You need the experienced insight and counsel of the Certified Family Law Specialists at Burke & Domercq.
