What to Expect at Your Initial Divorce Consultation

On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2020 | Divorce

Are you wondering what to expect at your initial divorce consultation at Burke & Domercq?  Are you wondering what information and documentation to bring to your initial consult and what information you should be organizing in preparation for your divorce?

Prior to scheduling the appointment, our experienced staff will run a conflict check to make certain the firm is able to provide representation. If we do not have any conflicts in your case we will schedule the consultation.

We want you to be as comfortable as possible.  Our attorneys deeply care about your case and your goals and objectives for the divorce.  What you can expect at your initial divorce consultation is an experienced and personable professional who wants what is best for you and will work hard to achieve the outcomes you seek.  You are going to get to know your attorney and many of our staff a lot better over the next few weeks and months.  Many of our former clients have commented on the family atmosphere and personal style of our firm and those you will be working closely with.

Please be prepared to provide the following:

  • when the marriage occurred
  • if there are any children and, if so, how old they are
  • Your income and the income of your spouse
  • As comprehensive a list of your assets and debts as is possible
  • Information about any business or professional practice which is owned in full or in part by either spouse (or both of you)

We will begin to discuss any potential areas that will be at issue, such as custody and parenting time, spousal support or property division matters.

At the consultation, you should be prepared to discuss the relevant facts and circumstances of your case while our Certified Family Law Specialist or experienced divorce attorney takes notes. Our attorney will then share next steps and the specific information you need to organize and provide for your case.

The divorce process can be emotionally difficult for all people involved. Understanding what to expect at your initial divorce consultation can make the meeting go more smoothly. You may also wish to learn more about alternative dispute resolution methods, such as divorce mediation or arbitration, as ways to potentially resolve your divorce case in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. Our attorneys may be able to help negotiate a settlement on your behalf which is fair and that protects your interests. If an agreement cannot be reached through negotiation or mediation we are prepared to litigate all issues which are in dispute in front of a Judge or magistrate.
